New Medical Marijuana Rules Target In-Vehicle Use
New regulations now define how medical marijuana can be transported on Oklahoma roads. The law, which took effect November 1, makes it illegal to consume marijuana in a vehicle and requires that any opened marijuana products be kept out of reach of the driver.
Open Containers Must Be Stored Away From Driver
Like Oklahoma’s alcohol open-container laws, the updated rule says opened medical marijuana cannot be accessible inside the passenger area. Patients must store opened items in the trunk or another area separate from the driver.
Violations are considered a misdemeanor and include a $250 trauma-care fee.
Law Applies to Both Drivers and Passengers
The updated statute clarifies that passengers also cannot consume marijuana while the vehicle is in motion on public roads. The goal is to close gaps in the state’s previous marijuana laws and reduce impairment risks on Oklahoma highways.
