Tulsa Animal Control officers have seized multiple roosters from a residential property following an investigation into an alleged cockfighting operation in Tulsa. The case was initiated after a neighbor provided video evidence that appeared to show two roosters being forced to fight in the backyard of a home.

Officers responded to the residence after reviewing the footage, which investigators say shows intentional animal cruelty consistent with cockfighting activity, a felony offense under Oklahoma law.

Evidence Found During Tulsa Cockfighting Investigation

During the search of the property, officers discovered gaffs, which are sharp metal blades commonly attached to a fighting rooster’s legs to inflict serious or fatal injuries during fights. According to Tulsa Animal Control, the presence of gaffs is a strong indicator of organized cockfighting, rather than incidental animal behavior.

Authorities seized approximately six roosters believed to be connected to the alleged activity. The birds were removed from the property and placed into protective custody pending further investigation.

The owner of the roosters, identified as Jose Barrios-Ramos, told officers the birds were his pets and claimed that he only “sparred” them occasionally. Investigators dispute that explanation, citing the video evidence and the specialized equipment recovered at the scene.

Cockfighting Is a Felony Under Oklahoma Law

Under Oklahoma Statute Title 21, cockfighting is classified as a felony offense due to its inherent cruelty and ties to illegal gambling operations. Convictions can carry significant fines, prison time, and forfeiture of animals involved.

Tulsa officials say the case remains under investigation and charges are pending review by the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office. Additional charges could be filed depending on the outcome of the investigation and forensic analysis of the seized items.

Animal control officials remind residents that reporting suspected animal cruelty can help prevent serious harm and stop illegal activity.
