Lawmakers Renew Push to Expand Teacher and School Employee Benefits
An Oklahoma teacher benefits proposal is returning to the Legislature as lawmakers build on bipartisan momentum from last year.
State Senator Mark Mann is once again partnering with Representative Emily Gise to advance a four-bill package aimed at expanding benefits for teachers and other school employees. Mann says the effort is about more than salary increases.
Oklahoma teacher benefits proposal expands family leave
The proposal would expand maternity leave to include adoption, provide paid leave for new fathers, add bereavement leave for the loss of a spouse or child, and extend family leave to 12 weeks.
Lawmakers say the Oklahoma teacher benefits proposal is designed to improve recruitment, retention, and overall support for education professionals.
Building on bipartisan support
Mann says last year’s bipartisan success demonstrated broad agreement that educators need stronger workplace protections. Education advocates say improved benefits help stabilize the workforce and improve outcomes for students.
The bills are expected to be debated when lawmakers return to the Capitol this session.
