Oklahoma tax credit bill expands parental choice program
The Oklahoma tax credit program is set for expansion after the House passed new legislation increasing its annual funding cap.
House Bill 3705 raises the Parental Choice Tax Credit limit from $250 million to $275 million.
The measure passed the Oklahoma House on April 9, 2026, and now moves to the State Senate for consideration.
Supporters say the expansion reflects strong demand from families seeking private school options.
The program provides tax credits to help cover private school tuition costs for eligible students.
Oklahoma tax credit demand continues to grow
The Oklahoma tax credit program has seen significant growth in both funding usage and participation.
According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, nearly the entire $250 million cap was used during the 2025 tax year.
Approximately $248.4 million was distributed to families for private school tuition.
In the 2024–2025 school year, more than 39,000 students received benefits through the program.
Officials also reported strong interest for the upcoming cycle, with over 31,000 applications filed on the first day for the 2025–2026 period.
The demand has been a key driver behind efforts to increase the funding cap.
Debate over oversight and public funding
The Oklahoma tax credit expansion has also sparked ongoing debate among lawmakers.
According to The Oklahoman, House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson raised concerns about transparency and oversight.
She argued that private schools receiving public funds should follow the same accountability standards as public schools.
Munson also questioned whether expanding the program diverts funding from public education Oklahoma needs.
House Speaker Kyle Hilbert responded that accountability ultimately rests with parents choosing the best education for their children.
He emphasized that families can leave schools that do not meet expectations.
Next steps for legislation
The Oklahoma tax credit bill passed the House with a 70–19 vote and now heads to the Senate.
Lawmakers will continue debating the balance between school choice and public school funding.
The outcome could shape the future of school choice Oklahoma programs and education funding priorities statewide.
