Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys Begin NCAA Regional Play
Both the Oklahoma Sooners baseball team and the Oklahoma State Cowboys baseball team are back in the 2026 NCAA Baseball Tournament, continuing two of the state's most successful college baseball traditions as regional play gets underway this weekend.
The appearance marks another postseason opportunity for both programs as they pursue a trip to the College World Series in Omaha.
While recent social media posts and online discussions have circulated incorrect historical claims about previous regional appearances and matchups, the official postseason records tell a different story.
Oklahoma Sooners Baseball Continues NCAA Tournament Tradition
The Oklahoma Sooners baseball program remains one of the most recognizable names in college baseball.
According to the NCAA Baseball Championship, Oklahoma's most memorable recent postseason run came in 2022 when the Sooners advanced all the way to the College World Series Finals.
More recently, the Sooners hosted postseason play in Norman after earning a coveted national seed during the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
Contrary to some online claims, Oklahoma has not previously played Georgia Tech in an Atlanta Regional under the format that has recently circulated online.
The Sooners enter this year's tournament looking to add another chapter to their postseason history.
Oklahoma State Cowboys Baseball Returns To Regional Competition
The Oklahoma State Cowboys baseball program is once again part of the NCAA postseason field.
According to Oklahoma State Athletics Baseball, the Cowboys have regularly hosted regional competition at O'Brate Stadium in Stillwater in recent years.
The program hosted NCAA Regionals in 2022, 2023, and 2024 and remains one of the nation's most consistent postseason contenders.
However, Oklahoma State did not make 13 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances as some reports have suggested.
The Cowboys' longest modern NCAA Tournament streak under head coach Josh Holliday ended when the program missed postseason play in 2018.
Likewise, Oklahoma State and Alabama have not met in a 9-7 regional championship game in Tuscaloosa as described in some online accounts.
College World Series Remains The Goal
Both the Oklahoma Sooners baseball and Oklahoma State Cowboys baseball programs enter regional competition with the same objective: advancing to Omaha.
According to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament Bracket, teams must survive regional and super regional competition before earning a berth in the College World Series.
For Oklahoma baseball fans, the next several days will determine whether one—or both—of the state's flagship programs can continue their postseason journey.
