Toby Keith Expressway approved for new Norman turnpike

The Oklahoma Legislature has approved a resolution naming a new 28-mile turnpike in the Norman area the Toby Keith Expressway, honoring the late country music star.

The measure was introduced by State Senator Lisa Standridge and State Representative Jason Blair. Lawmakers said the designation received the blessing of Keith’s family.

The planned Toby Keith Expressway will serve as an east-west connector between Interstate 44 in Newcastle and Interstate 35 in Norman.

The resolution also includes naming a bridge over I-35 at Indian Hills Road the Toby Keith Memorial Bridge and designating a bridge over the Canadian River as the “Should’ve Been a Cowboy Bridge.”

Turnpike planning and development information is available through the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.

Debate over Toby Keith Expressway designation

Some residents have expressed frustration because Toby Keith previously voiced opposition to the turnpike project.

Lawmakers acknowledged the concerns but said the Toby Keith Expressway is meant to honor his legacy as a patriotic Oklahoman and global music icon.

Keith, whose birth name was Toby Covel, passed away on February 5, 2024, after battling cancer.
