Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper killed in line of duty crash on I-35

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper killed in line of duty crash on I-35 has been identified as Trooper Vernon Brake.

According to KWTV News 9 , the incident happened April 8, 2026, in north Oklahoma City.

Trooper Brake was on duty at the time, traveling along Interstate 35 when the crash occurred.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support across the state as more details are confirmed.


Crash details released by Oklahoma Highway Patrol

The fatal crash involving Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper Vernon Brake I-35 Oklahoma City occurred around 11:27 a.m. near Hefner Road.

Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol line of duty death Trooper Vernon Brake say a southbound vehicle lost control for an unknown reason.

That vehicle crossed the center cable barrier and entered the northbound lanes.

It then struck Trooper Brake’s patrol unit.

The multi-vehicle crash Oklahoma City I-35 trooper killed line of duty resulted in three fatalities at the scene.

Trooper Brake, the driver of the other vehicle, and a four-year-old passenger were all pronounced deceased.

Authorities say the cause of the initial loss of control remains under investigation.


DPS confirms investigation and trooper’s service
