Oklahoma Highway Patrol Seeks Funding for 150 New Troopers
As lawmakers prepare for the upcoming legislative session, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol budget is drawing attention as state officials seek funding to expand law enforcement staffing statewide.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Budget Reflects Expanding Duties
The Department of Public Safety is requesting approximately $26 million to hire and train 150 new state troopers, citing increased responsibilities across Oklahoma. Officials say troopers are now handling more than traditional highway enforcement, including emergency response, disaster support, and assistance to local agencies.
According to DPS leadership, staffing levels have not kept pace with population growth, increased traffic volume, and expanded public safety demands. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol budget request aims to restore staffing levels to better support statewide coverage.
School Security Included in Oklahoma Highway Patrol Budget
In addition to new troopers, DPS is requesting $1.6 million to place Highway Patrol troopers on school security assignments. State officials say the additional presence would support local law enforcement during high-traffic school hours and special events.
Lawmakers will review the request during budget hearings beginning in February. Funding decisions will be made as part of the broader state budget process, overseen by legislative appropriations committees.
