Mike Mazzei Wins Oklahoma Republican Governor Runoff, Advances to November Election

Former state senator Mike Mazzei has won the Oklahoma Republican governor runoff, narrowly defeating Attorney General Gentner Drummond in one of the state’s most closely watched races.

Mazzei received 50.3% of the vote, compared with 49.7% for Drummond. Drummond conceded the race Tuesday night, clearing the way for Mazzei to face Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson in the Nov. 3 General Election.

The Oklahoma governor race now moves into its general election phase following Mazzei’s narrow Republican runoff victory.

Mazzei emerged from the June Republican primary alongside Drummond, sending the two candidates into Tuesday’s runoff to determine who would carry the GOP nomination into November.

The final margin showed how closely divided Republican voters were between the two candidates, with less than one percentage point separating them.

With Drummond conceding Tuesday night, Mazzei becomes the Republican nominee seeking to succeed Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is term-limited and cannot seek another term.

Official election results and county-by-county totals are available through the Oklahoma State Election Board.

Mazzei previously served in the Oklahoma Senate and has centered his gubernatorial campaign on issues including taxes, state spending, education and economic policy.

His victory sets up a November contest against Munson, the Democratic leader of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Cyndi Munson Responds to Mazzei Victory

Munson quickly turned her attention toward the November election after the Republican runoff was decided.

In a statement Tuesday night, she criticized Mazzei’s positions on public education, taxes and healthcare and said those issues would be central to her general election campaign.

“I look forward to debating Mike Mazzei on these very issues,” Munson said.

Munson also said she intends to campaign across party lines and focus on public schools, healthcare access, tax policy and the state’s relationship with Oklahoma tribal nations.

The November race will determine Oklahoma’s next governor and the person who will replace Stitt when his second term concludes.

Oklahoma has elected Republican governors in each of the past four gubernatorial elections, making Mazzei’s victory in the Republican runoff a significant step in the 2026 race. Munson will attempt to become the state’s first Democratic governor elected since Brad Henry won reelection in 2006.

Robert Franklin Wins Republican State Superintendent Runoff

Tuesday’s elections also determined the Republican nominee for Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Robert Franklin defeated James Taylor with 54.62% of the vote, while Taylor received 45.38%.

Franklin, a longtime Oklahoma educator and school administrator, will now advance to the Nov. 3 General Election against Democratic nominee Jennettie Marshall.

The winner will lead the Oklahoma State Department of Education and serve as Oklahoma’s top elected public education official.

Franklin has emphasized his experience in education, including work as a special education teacher and administrator, while campaigning on addressing the state’s teacher shortage, student discipline and public school leadership.

The two statewide runoff results set up major November contests for Oklahoma voters, with both the governor’s office and state superintendent’s office among the statewide positions that will be decided in the General Election.
