OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is bringing back a piece of state law enforcement history — its classic black-and-white patrol vehicles.

The agency announced the return of the historic color scheme, first introduced in 1937, as part of an effort to honor its roots and maintain high visibility on Oklahoma roads.

A Nod to Tradition

For nearly two decades, OHP cruisers have sported a solid black paint scheme. That will change for select vehicles as the agency reintroduces the black-and-white design that many Oklahomans associate with state troopers.

“This design has been part of our identity for decades,” an OHP spokesperson said. “We’re excited to bring it back on select units as a way to honor our history and improve visibility.”

Safety Meets History

While the design is a nod to tradition, the updated black-and-white vehicles will feature highly reflective graphics to enhance nighttime visibility, improving safety for both troopers and the public.

According to OHP, the change is not agency-wide — only a limited number of vehicles will carry the historic look as they are deployed across the state.

First Debut

Motorists may start spotting the new patrol units on Oklahoma highways in the coming weeks. The rollout will continue gradually as new vehicles are put into service.

The OHP hopes the classic look will serve as both a tribute to the past and a modern tool for roadway safety.
