New Drone Program Targets Prison Smuggling
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has deployed drones at Red Rock Correctional Center near Lawton in a bold attempt to stop the smuggling of contraband.
The drones will fly continuous surveillance patterns over the facility, monitoring for drugs, weapons, and other banned items. Officials say drones provide an advantage over traditional ground patrols because they can cover more ground quickly and at lower cost.
Trial Run Before Statewide Expansion
The drone initiative will undergo a six-week trial period. During this time, ODOC will measure the program’s effectiveness in stopping smuggling attempts and evaluate potential cost savings. If the trial proves successful, administrators may expand the drone program to prisons across the state.
Corrections officials say drones could be especially effective in rural facilities where manpower is stretched thin. They also emphasized safety, noting the drones will not interfere with inmate rights but will strengthen security and reduce risks for staff.
