CareerTech Seeks $31.6 Million for Workforce Training Expansion

Oklahoma’s Career and Technology Education system is asking lawmakers for a major investment aimed at addressing workforce shortages across the state.

Oklahoma CareerTech Workforce Training Demand Grows

CareerTech Director Brent Haken told a state Senate subcommittee that demand for Oklahoma CareerTech workforce training continues to outpace available resources. His budget request includes $31.6 million to expand training programs and apprenticeship opportunities.

Haken says more than 6,500 Oklahomans are currently waiting for access to CareerTech classes that could help them transition into higher-paying, in-demand careers.

A significant portion of the funding would support expanded apprenticeship programs, particularly in skilled trades, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing. Lawmakers were told the investment would help businesses fill critical labor gaps while giving workers faster pathways into stable employment.

CareerTech officials emphasized that workforce shortages are affecting both rural and urban areas, and that timely funding is critical to maintaining Oklahoma’s economic competitiveness.

The request now moves into broader budget negotiations as lawmakers prepare for the upcoming legislative session.
