Winter Weather Moves In as Oklahoma Prepares for Hazardous Travel
Colder Air and Possible Snowfall Expected
Oklahoma is bracing for its second round of winter weather this week as another strong cold front moves through the state this afternoon. The National Weather Service says temperatures will fall rapidly behind the front, with wind chills dropping into the teens and 20s tonight. Forecasters also say light snow or sleet is possible in parts of northern, central, and western Oklahoma — enough to create slick spots on roads by the Thursday morning commute.
Officials Warn About Bridges and Overpasses
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers remind drivers that bridges and overpasses freeze first, often becoming hazardous long before main roadways. Even small amounts of moisture can turn to ice quickly, especially overnight as temperatures fall well below freezing.
Experts Urge Oklahomans to Prepare Vehicles
Emergency officials recommend keeping a winter kit in your vehicle, including:
blankets or warm clothes
water and snacks
flashlight and phone charger
ice scraper
jumper cables
Drivers are also encouraged to check their tires, battery, windshield wipers, washer fluid, and fully clear ice or frost from all windows before heading out.
Take It Slow on the Roads
Authorities say the safest approach is to slow down, increase following distance, and stay alert for black ice — especially during the early morning hours. More updates will be issued as the system moves through the state.
