Icy Roads Lead to Multiple Crashes Statewide

Drivers Caught Off Guard by Overnight Ice

Unexpected icy road conditions across Oklahoma created dangerous situations for drivers this morning. According to OHP Lt. Mark Southall, many of the crashes occurred on bridges and overpasses, where moisture freezes faster than on regular pavement.

Southall said drivers hit seemingly normal pavement and then suddenly lost traction when reaching elevated surfaces.

One Fatal Crash Near Fletcher

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed one fatality near Fletcher, where ice contributed to a deadly accident early this morning. No additional details about the victim have been released.

OHP Encourages Caution as Temperatures Drop

Troopers remind drivers that even a light glaze of ice can be enough to cause spinouts or major accidents. They advise:

  • Reducing speeds

  • Increasing following distance

  • Being alert on bridges, ramps, and highway flyovers

More freezing temperatures are possible overnight, and drivers should remain cautious during the morning commute.
