OKC Traffic Delays Start Today on I-44 Bridge Work
Commuters in Oklahoma City are being advised to prepare for significant OKC traffic delays starting this morning as roadwork gets underway.
On Northbound Interstate 44 near Southwest 74th Street, the northbound lanes will be reduced to a single lane of traffic while crews perform bridge repairs. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) estimates the lane restriction will remain in place for four to six weeks as crews work to improve safety and extend the life of the bridge structure.
Second Major Project to Impact Northwest 23rd Street
Drivers in northwest Oklahoma City will also see delays on Northwest 23rd Street, where a major resurfacing and improvement project will begin between Western Avenue and Broadway. According to ODOT, this project will last about a year and a half, and frequent lane closures and traffic shifts are expected throughout the construction zone.
Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation stress that these projects are necessary to maintain pavement quality, improve safety, and support growing traffic volumes. They also remind drivers that slower speeds and increased congestion are likely, particularly during morning and evening rush hours.
Drivers Urged to Plan Ahead
With both projects active at the same time, travel times across the metro could be significantly impacted. ODOT recommends:
Using alternate routes when possible
Allowing extra time for all trips
Checking traffic alerts on the ODOT website before traveling
