Commission Approves Long-Term Infrastructure Investment

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission has approved an eight-year, $8 billion construction plan aimed at rebuilding and maintaining thousands of miles of state roads and bridges.

The plan includes critical projects on the state’s interstate system, U.S. highways, and rural roads.

INTERVIEW

ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz said Oklahoma’s infrastructure faces major challenges after decades of deferred maintenance.

“Our highway system is worth about $100 billion, but we need at least $27 billion to bring it up to modern standards,” Gatz said. “We’re making progress — just not getting there fast enough.”

ODOT Focus on Safety and Economic Growth

Gatz emphasized that road improvements are not just about smoother commutes — they are about saving lives and supporting the economy.

“When our highways improve, freight moves faster, and local communities grow,” he said. “These investments keep Oklahoma competitive.”

The new plan prioritizes bridge replacements, safety upgrades, and congestion relief in high-traffic corridors. ODOT will also expand efforts to modernize rural roads connecting agricultural and industrial zones.

Transportation officials say Oklahoma now ranks among the top 10 states nationally for reducing structurally deficient bridges, down from 17% in 2004 to just 1% today.
