Oklahoma Highway Patrol Warns of Fake Trooper Targeting Drivers in Stroud

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is warning drivers after a reported encounter involving a fake Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper attempting to pull over a young woman in Stroud.

According to OHP, the incident occurred when the woman was signaled to stop by a driver operating a black Nissan Titan equipped with flashing lights. Believing the vehicle was not legitimate, she remained inside her car and refused to exit.

Fake Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Attempts to Detain Driver

The woman reported that the suspect attempted to open her car door when she did not comply. When she reached for her phone and pepper spray, the impersonator fled the scene.

OHP says the suspect is not affiliated with law enforcement and is actively being sought. Authorities stress that impersonating an officer is a serious felony under Oklahoma law.

Troopers advise motorists to call 911 immediately if they suspect a traffic stop is not legitimate. Dispatchers can confirm whether an officer is in the area and instruct drivers on how to proceed safely.

How Drivers Can Protect Themselves During Traffic Stops

OHP recommends drivers activate hazard lights and proceed to a well-lit, populated area if uncertain. Official patrol vehicles will never object to verification.

The agency is asking anyone with information about the fake Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper or the Nissan Titan to contact OHP or local law enforcement. Resources on verifying traffic stops are available through the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety.
