500 ODOT Trucks Mobilized Ahead of Approaching Winter Weather

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) says it will take no chances this time as another round of winter weather moves into the state. After widespread frustration over ODOT’s limited pretreatment efforts during last week’s storm—an event that led to 350+ crashes in the metro and left dozens stranded—the agency has launched its most visible weather preparation effort of the season.

ODOT confirms 500 trucks and snowplows are now staged statewide. That includes 50 vehicles in Central Oklahoma and 25 in Eastern Oklahoma, with additional mechanical and emergency crews on standby.

Bridges and Overpasses Already Sprayed with Salt Brine

Goal: Prevent Ice Bonding to Roadway Surfaces

ODOT says all elevated surfaces—bridges, overpasses, and flyovers—have been pretreated with salt brine, the same mixture used in previous years to keep ice from bonding to pavement. Once precipitation starts, sanding trucks will deploy with salt, sand, and salt-sand mixture to improve traction on major highways and interstates.

Officials emphasize this system will likely produce slick spots early, especially during the morning commute, and drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and stay weather aware.
