A Historic Norton Jewelers Marietta Business Prepares to Close

A cornerstone of downtown Marietta is preparing to close its doors after more than eight decades in business. Norton Jewelers Marietta, a family-owned jewelry store that has served generations of residents, will officially close later this year, marking the end of an era for the south-central Oklahoma community.

The business traces its roots back to the years following World War II, when the father of current owner Ronnie Norton turned a hobby repairing watches into a full-time profession. What began as a small operation quickly grew into a trusted local business, known for craftsmanship, personal service, and long-standing relationships with customers.

Three Generations Behind the Counter

Over the years, Norton Jewelers Marietta became more than a retail shop — it became part of the town’s identity. Members of three generations of the Norton family worked behind the counter, helping customers select engagement rings, repair heirloom watches, and mark life’s milestones.

Family-run businesses like Norton Jewelers have become increasingly rare as national chains and online retailers reshape consumer habits. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, family-owned businesses still make up a significant portion of America’s economy, but many struggle with succession planning and rising operating costs.

A Changing Retail Landscape

The closure reflects broader challenges facing small-town retailers across Oklahoma. Shifts toward e-commerce, rising insurance and utility costs, and workforce challenges have made long-term sustainability difficult for many independent shops.

While Norton Jewelers will close later this year, the family says they are grateful for decades of community support and loyalty. For many residents, the store represents far more than jewelry — it holds memories tied to weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and family traditions.
