Norman Public Schools Cancels Classes For OU Football Home Opener

Norman Public Schools will cancel classes on Friday, September 4, as the University of Oklahoma opens its 2026 football season under the lights against UTEP, a game expected to bring heavy traffic, road closures and thousands of visitors into Norman.

District officials said the decision was made to protect student and staff safety, citing anticipated traffic congestion that would affect school bus routes, employee travel and families trying to reach campuses. The cancellation also aligns with the University of Oklahoma's decision to suspend in-person classes at its Norman campus on game day. Both schools previously took similar action when the Sooners opened the season on a Friday in 2024.

Norman Public Schools Adjusts Calendar For Friday Game

According to Norman Public Schools, all district schools and offices will be closed on September 4 because of the expected impact from the OU Football home opener.

To make up the missed instructional day, the district has extended the school year. The last day of classes for students has been moved from May 20 to May 21, 2027.

The closure also creates a four-day holiday weekend for many families, with the canceled Friday classes followed by Labor Day on Monday, September 7. Students and staff will return to classrooms on Tuesday, September 8.

Meanwhile, the University of Oklahoma announced it will cancel in-person classes at its Norman campus on September 4 while continuing normal operations at the OU Health Sciences Center, OU-Tulsa, and online programs. OU Football Home Opener Expected To Create Heavy Traffic

The Sooners will host UTEP at 7 p.m. inside Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, marking the program's first home game of the season.

Game-day traffic is expected to build throughout Friday afternoon, with drivers urged to avoid areas surrounding campus beginning around 1 p.m.

Major congestion is anticipated along Boyd Street, Jenkins Avenue, Asp Avenue, Buchanan Avenue and Lindsey Street, particularly near Campus Corner and the stadium.

Fans traveling to Norman without prepaid parking are encouraged to use the free public parking lots at the Lloyd Noble Center, where shuttle buses will provide transportation directly to the stadium throughout the day. Traffic updates and road closures are available through the City of Norman.

Sooners head coach Brent Venables said Friday night home games are rare and expects an electric atmosphere as Oklahoma begins its 2026 season.

Parents Encouraged To Plan Ahead

With Norman Public Schools closed for the day, parents are encouraged to arrange childcare well in advance of the holiday weekend.

The district said the cancellation is intended to minimize transportation challenges and improve safety as tens of thousands of football fans travel through Norman.

Families should also expect increased traffic throughout the city before and after kickoff, even if they are not attending the game.

Officials recommend allowing extra travel time, avoiding areas near campus whenever possible and using designated parking and shuttle services if attending the game. Additional transportation and parking information is available through the Norman Public Schools.

By canceling classes before one of the largest sporting events of the year, Norman Public Schools hopes to reduce traffic conflicts, improve student safety and help families navigate one of the busiest days on Norman's calendar.
