OHP: Bus Swerved to Avoid Deer Before Rollover Crash
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports the Minco school bus crashed after striking a deer on a rural highway Monday night. Troopers say the driver attempted to avoid the deer but struck it anyway, causing the bus to swerve, lose control, and roll over one time.
Coach Cody Schmidt Among the Injured
The driver, 38-year-old Minco softball coach Cody Schmidt, was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. He was among three adults injured, including one who remains in critical condition. Four students were also hurt — two with minor injuries and two with more serious injuries.
Superintendent Kevin Sims: Only Driver Seat Belt Installed
Minco Superintendent Kevin Sims confirmed the bus had only one seat belt — the driver’s.
“The only seat belt on the bus was for the driver, and he was wearing it,” Sims said.
