Mental Health Awareness Month events expand across Oklahoma

Mental Health Awareness Month continues across Oklahoma this May with community events, statewide resource campaigns, and ongoing discussions about the future of mental health funding and care access.

Organizations and state leaders say the goal is to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and connect Oklahomans with available support services.

Several public events are scheduled throughout May as communities focus on emotional wellness and mental health education.

Mental Health Awareness Month includes walks and community festivals

Multiple events tied to Mental Health Awareness Month are planned across the state in the coming days.

The annual NAMIWalks Oklahoma event is scheduled for May 16 at Scissortail Park in Oklahoma City. Organizers say the family-friendly awareness walk will include vendors, resources, and support organizations.

In Ponca City, the third annual Mental Health Festival is planned for May 14 at War Memorial Park with free food, games, and community resource booths.

Mental health advocacy and outreach efforts are supported by organizations like the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

988 mental health hotline funding remains under discussion

Funding for Oklahoma’s 988 Mental Health Lifeline continues to be debated during the legislative session.

State lawmakers are considering proposals including Senate Bill 1369 and House Bill 4092 to establish long-term funding for the hotline once federal grant support expires later this year.

Officials continue encouraging Oklahomans to use the free, 24-hour crisis line during mental health emergencies.

Mental health crisis resources in Oklahoma are coordinated through the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

State leaders propose mental health agency restructuring

Discussions tied to Mental Health Awareness Month are also highlighting proposed changes to Oklahoma’s mental health system.

State health officials have outlined plans to restructure parts of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, including shifting Medicaid management responsibilities to the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.

Leaders say the redesign is intended to address budget challenges and improve operational efficiency.

Mental health focus includes older adults and maternal care

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month observances also include specialized awareness efforts.

An Older Adult Mental Health Awareness symposium is scheduled for May 7, while May 6 is recognized globally as World Maternal Mental Health Day, highlighting the emotional well-being of mothers and families.

Advocates say continued education and access to care remain critical as Oklahoma works to expand behavioral health support statewide.
