Lankford Reacts to Arrest of Venezuela President Maduro

U.S. Senator James Lankford is strongly backing U.S. action following the arrest of Venezuela President Maduro, calling it long-overdue accountability for a regime he says fueled corruption, repression, and drug trafficking.

Lankford, who serves as Senate Republican Conference Vice Chair and is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, released a statement praising President Trump’s actions and emphasizing the impact Venezuela’s leadership has had on American communities.

Lankford Cites Drug Trafficking and Corruption

In his statement, Lankford directly accused Venezuela President Maduro of enabling criminal networks responsible for sending illegal drugs into the United States.

“When you funnel drugs and chaos into American streets, you should face justice,” Lankford said. “Today the very long and powerful arm of justice grabbed Nicolás Maduro and will put him in front of an American court.”

Lankford said Maduro ruled Venezuela through fraud, repression, and corruption, adding that his regime played a role in drug trafficking operations that sent deadly narcotics into U.S. communities.

Calls for Democracy and a Peaceful Transition

Lankford said the Venezuelan people deserve free and fair elections and a peaceful return to stability after years of political and economic turmoil under Maduro’s leadership.

“Maduro was a dictator who ruled through fraud, repression, and corruption,” Lankford said. “The Venezuelan people deserve a peaceful return to freedom and prosperity.”

The senator also thanked President Trump for following through on commitments to combat international drug trafficking and crime.

“Thank you, President Trump, for keeping your word to stop the flow of drugs and crime into our nation,” Lankford said.

Questions remain about how long U.S. involvement will continue and what the next phase of governance in Venezuela may look like.
