Kiowa Code Talkers Join Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame
The Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame has posthumously inducted three Kiowa Code Talkers who served during World War II. The honorees — Leonard Red Wolf Cozad Sr., James Paddlety Jr., and John Tsatoke — are remembered as heroes whose bravery remained secret for decades.
Tribal leaders joined military officials to honor the men during the ceremony, celebrating their role in secure wartime communications. Their work remained classified for years, and many family members only discovered their service after the men had passed away.
Honoring the Legacy of Kiowa Warriors
Kiowa tribal leaders said the induction recognizes more than individual service. It celebrates a proud legacy of Indigenous warriors who contributed to America’s military success in one of history’s most dangerous conflicts.
The Military Hall of Fame said their courage and code skills saved lives and strengthened Allied operations in the Pacific. Their unique language allowed U.S. forces to transmit messages the enemy could not decipher — a contribution that helped turn the tide of war.
Families Finally Receive Recognition
Families of the three men accepted the honors on their behalf. Many said the induction brings long overdue recognition to Native soldiers who served quietly and selflessly.
