Jenks Downtown Master Plan Approved Despite Business Owners' Parking Concerns

The Jenks Downtown Master Plan has officially been adopted by the Jenks City Council, marking the end of a planning process that has been more than two years in the making.

According to News On 6, the newly approved master plan is intended to make downtown Jenks safer, more walkable, and more inviting while preserving flexibility for future improvements along the city's historic Main Street corridor.

While city officials emphasized that no immediate construction or parking changes will occur, several downtown business owners voiced concerns during Tuesday night's meeting, arguing that removing Main Street parking could negatively impact local merchants.

City leaders say the adoption of the plan is only the beginning of the implementation process, with final design decisions and funding still years away.

Jenks Downtown Master Plan Includes Flexible Design Options

The newly adopted Jenks Downtown Master Plan was developed by Beck Design and serves as a long-term vision for downtown redevelopment.

According to News On 6, Jenks Planning Director Marcae Hilton described the document as a flexible framework rather than a final construction plan.

One of the most discussed concepts would replace portions of on-street parking with expanded sidewalks, outdoor seating areas, landscaping, and additional public gathering spaces.

Hilton emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding which portions of Main Street, if any, would eventually undergo those changes.

The city says additional public input and discussions with downtown property owners will occur before any permanent modifications are approved.

Business Owners Worry About Loss Of Main Street Parking

Opposition to portions of the Jenks Downtown Master Plan largely centers on the potential loss of convenient customer parking.

Earlier this year, the city conducted a 10-day pilot project that temporarily removed portions of Main Street parking while adding landscaping and pedestrian-friendly features.

According to News On 6, James Pearce, owner of American Heritage Antiques, told council members his business experienced a 71 percent decline in sales during the pilot program compared to the same period a year earlier.

Pearce said the temporary parking changes significantly reduced customer traffic and expressed concern that permanent parking reductions could have lasting effects on downtown businesses.

Other merchants also questioned whether customers would be willing to park on side streets rather than directly along Main Street.

City Promises More Public Input Before Construction Begins

Although the Jenks Downtown Master Plan has now been formally adopted, city leaders stress that implementation remains several years away.

Officials say additional planning, engineering, funding approvals, and design contracts must all be completed before construction could begin.

The city has also committed to meeting directly with Main Street merchants before finalizing any parking or streetscape improvements.

Planning Director Marcae Hilton said community feedback has played an important role throughout the process and will continue to shape future decisions as the project moves forward.

City officials hope the final plan will balance improved pedestrian experiences with the needs of downtown businesses that rely on convenient customer access.

Additional information about upcoming public meetings and planning updates is available through the City of Jenks Meetings & Agendas.

As discussions continue, the Jenks Downtown Master Plan remains one of the city's most significant long-term redevelopment efforts, with both supporters and business owners expected to play an active role before any permanent changes reach Main Street.
