Republican Runoff Election Decides House District 35 Nominee
Voters across five Oklahoma counties are heading to the polls today to decide the Republican nominee in the House District 35 runoff election, a race that will determine who advances to the February general election.
House District 35 Runoff Election Draws Voters to the Polls
The runoff pits Dillon Travis against Pawnee County Sheriff Mike Waters, following a crowded Republican primary that failed to produce a majority winner. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across Creek, Noble, Osage, Pawnee, and Payne counties, which make up House District 35.
The winner of today’s House District 35 runoff election will face Democratic nominee Luke Kruse in a special general election scheduled for February 10.
Vacancy Created After Former Lawmaker’s Guilty Plea
The seat became vacant after former Representative Ty Burns resigned in August 2024, following guilty pleas to domestic abuse and assault charges. State law required a special election to fill the remainder of the term.
According to the Oklahoma State Election Board, runoff elections are required when no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary.
What’s at Stake in House District 35
House District 35 has historically leaned Republican, making today’s runoff especially significant. Issues such as public safety, rural infrastructure, taxation, and education funding have featured prominently in the campaign.
