Highway 51 Overpass Proposal Could Reshape Downtown Wagoner
A proposed Highway 51 overpass proposal is generating concern among residents and local leaders in Wagoner as county officials push forward plans that could dramatically alter traffic patterns, close railroad crossings, and impact businesses near downtown.
The project would construct a new railroad overpass near Main Street while rerouting portions of Highway 51 around downtown Wagoner.
Supporters say the project would improve traffic flow and eliminate delays caused by trains. Critics worry about the impact on businesses, homes, infrastructure, and potential property acquisitions.
According to reporting from FOX23 News, city leaders are still reviewing the proposal and say many questions remain unanswered.
Highway 51 Overpass Proposal Would Change Traffic Flow
Current plans would reroute Highway 51 south and east before bringing it back north toward Main Street.
Instead of continuing straight through Cherokee Street, traffic would follow the new alignment as part of the overpass project.
County officials believe the redesign would improve traffic movement and reduce backups caused by trains blocking crossings throughout the city.
The proposal would also create a railroad "quiet zone," allowing trains to travel through town without routinely sounding their horns at designated crossings.
For many residents, the quiet zone could significantly reduce noise pollution near neighborhoods and businesses located close to the railroad corridor.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, grade separation projects are commonly used to improve safety and reduce traffic delays at busy railroad crossings.
Mayor Raises Concerns About Business And Property Impacts
Wagoner Mayor Dalton Self said he only recently became aware of the proposal and believes city leaders need more information before supporting the project.
Self said the plan could affect seven local businesses and potentially displace residents living near the proposed route.
He also questioned whether the project could create future costs for the city.
"We don't know what's going to happen to our infrastructure. We don't know if they're wanting funds from the city," Self said. "The county has just done this, and they want us to sign a letter that we support this."
The mayor added that he believes there may be alternative overpass locations that could better serve Wagoner residents while minimizing impacts on homes and businesses.
Questions have also been raised about whether property owners could eventually face acquisition requests if construction moves forward.
According to the City of Wagoner Official Website, city officials continue reviewing the proposal and gathering information ahead of public discussions.
Public Meeting Scheduled As Questions Remain
The proposal would close seven railroad crossings between Northeast 10th Street and Southeast 10th Street.
Safety upgrades would be installed at the crossings that remain open in order to establish the planned quiet zone.
Residents have expressed concerns about emergency vehicle access, traffic detours, construction timelines, and how the project could affect daily travel throughout the community.
Some business owners are also worried that changing the route of Highway 51 could reduce visibility and traffic for businesses that currently benefit from vehicles traveling through downtown. Others want more information about whether property acquisitions, easements, or future right-of-way purchases could be required before construction begins.
County officials have argued the project is intended to improve safety, reduce congestion, and eliminate lengthy delays caused by train traffic. However, many residents say they want a clearer understanding of the project's long-term impact before offering support.
According to the FOX23 News, the Wagoner City Council will hold a special public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wagoner Civic Center to discuss the proposal and answer questions from residents.
The meeting is expected to provide the public with its first detailed opportunity to learn how the proposed project could reshape transportation, business development, and quality of life in downtown Wagoner for years to come.
