GOP Infighting Escalates as Senate Freedom Caucus Rift Deepens
GOP infighting in the Oklahoma Senate is escalating as tensions grow between members of the conservative Freedom Caucus and Republican leadership.
Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton has removed Senator Shane Jett from his role as vice chair of the powerful Senate Rules Committee. Paxton says the move was made at the request of another Freedom Caucus member.
GOP infighting in Oklahoma Senate fueled by public accusations
Jett has publicly accused some Republican lawmakers of being intoxicated while conducting legislative business during the final day of last year’s session. He has also filed legislation that would prohibit the possession or consumption of alcohol inside the State Capitol.
Paxton has pushed back strongly, calling the allegations baseless and labeling the rhetoric harmful to the Senate’s credibility.
Internal divisions surface before session begins
Political observers say the dispute highlights growing divisions among Republicans just days before the legislative session, potentially complicating negotiations on major policy issues.
Whether the rift will impact legislative priorities remains to be seen, but leadership turmoil could affect committee dynamics early in the session.
