George Tomek, a decorated Navy veteran and one of Oklahoma’s most respected news broadcasters, has died at the age of 86.
A Career That Defined Oklahoma Journalism
George Tomek began his broadcasting career in 1960 and quickly became a trusted voice in Oklahoma journalism. Over more than five decades, Tomek covered nearly every major political and social shift in the state, earning a reputation for thoughtful reporting and deep institutional knowledge.
Tomek was a longtime anchor and news director at KFOR, where he helped shape modern television news in Oklahoma. His work extended beyond daily newscasts, focusing heavily on political analysis and public affairs reporting.
George Tomek National Political Coverage and Public Service
As a political journalist, Tomek covered every Democratic National Convention from 1968 through 1984, offering Oklahoma viewers direct insight into national politics during a turbulent era. He later hosted public affairs programming on OETA, continuing that work until 2010.
His commitment to journalism earned him induction into the Journalism Hall of Fame, recognizing a career defined by accuracy, fairness, and public service.
