Two toddlers discovered alone and living in unsafe conditions
Police in Enid arrested a 25-year-old mother after finding her two young children locked inside a filthy apartment earlier this week.
Authorities discovered the two toddlers, ages two and four, after neighbors called 911. They reported hearing the children yelling for their mother inside an apartment at the Oakwood West complex.
Horrific living conditions discovered
When officers entered the residence, they found one of the children locked in a closet. The apartment was filled with piles of trash, animal feces, and insects. The children appeared hungry and scared.
Enid Police Captain Scott Miller said the conditions were some of the worst officers had seen in years. “It’s heartbreaking to find children living like this. They deserve better,” he said.
Police immediately contacted the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, which took the children into protective custody.
Enid Mother arrested, investigation ongoing
The mother, whose name has not been released, faces multiple charges including child neglect and endangerment. She remains in custody at the Garfield County Detention Center.
Officers said the woman offered no explanation for leaving her children alone. Neighbors told investigators she often disappeared for hours or even days.
Police are working with DHS to determine whether other relatives can care for the children. Authorities said additional charges could be filed once the investigation is complete.
