Central Counties See Worsening Conditions
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report shows worsening conditions across Oklahoma. Six central counties now face severe drought, while much of the rest of the state remains abnormally dry.
The Panhandle and parts of northwestern Oklahoma have fared better, but meteorologists say even those areas are drying fast.
Oklahoma Farmers Feel the Strain
Farmers across the state are reporting cracked soil and shrinking ponds. Some ranchers have been forced to buy feed early, anticipating poor grazing conditions through winter.
Oklahoma’s agriculture experts say this year’s drought could delay planting for winter wheat and harm next season’s yields if rainfall doesn’t return soon.
Little Relief Ahead
Forecast models suggest only minimal rain over the next week. Far southwestern Oklahoma is expected to remain the driest, while central and eastern regions could see scattered light showers.
The Oklahoma Mesonet warns that longer-term drought conditions could persist through early winter if precipitation stays below normal.
