Shortage Slows Court Cases

A statewide shortage of court reporters is creating major delays in Oklahoma’s legal system. Officials say 25 of the state’s 77 counties have no full-time court reporters.

In some regions, one reporter covers up to five counties, making it nearly impossible to keep up with hearings.

Low Pay Drives the Problem

Starting salaries for Oklahoma court reporters average around $53,000.Neighboring states offer $40,000–$50,000 more for experienced professionals. As a result, many leave for higher-paying jobs.

Judges warn that without new hiring incentives, trial backlogs will continue to grow. Lawmakers are reviewing funding proposals for next session to address the shortage.
