Collinsville Fire Department adopts 24-on 72-off schedule

The Collinsville Fire Department is set to become the first in Oklahoma to adopt a 24-on 72-off firefighter schedule.

According to News On 6, the new rotation will take effect in July, replacing the current 24-on, 48-off schedule used by many departments across the state.

City leaders say the move is designed to improve firefighter wellness while maintaining strong emergency response and service reliability for the community.

New schedule aims to improve firefighter well-being

The updated 24-on 72-off schedule is expected to give firefighters more time to recover between shifts.

Officials say the change will help reduce firefighter burnout and fatigue caused by long hours, overnight calls, and high call volumes.

Department leaders also believe the shift will improve morale and support better mental health for firefighters, both on and off duty.

The change could also strengthen hiring efforts, as departments nationwide look for ways to improve working conditions.

Organizations like the International Association of Fire Fighters have supported similar scheduling models as a way to improve retention and long-term job satisfaction.

City leaders say public safety will not be impacted

Officials say the new schedule will not impact public safety or emergency response times.

The Collinsville Fire Department includes both full-time and volunteer firefighters, with about 20 members transitioning to the new rotation.

Leaders say better-rested crews can improve firefighter performance during emergencies, leading to safer and more effective responses.

Safety standards from the National Fire Protection Association emphasize the importance of rest and recovery in maintaining effective fire service operations.

City officials say the transition has been carefully planned to ensure the community continues to receive consistent and reliable protection.

The 24-on 72-off firefighter schedule will officially begin in July as Collinsville becomes the first department in Oklahoma to adopt the model.
