Cherokee Nation Explores Satellite Nursing School With University of Oklahoma

The Cherokee Nation is exploring a major investment aimed at addressing the nursing shortage in rural Oklahoma through a new partnership with the University of Oklahoma.

Proposed Nursing School Targets Rural Healthcare Gaps

Cherokee Nation leaders confirm discussions are underway with the University of Oklahoma to establish a satellite nursing school in Tahlequah. The proposed project would use a $30 million earmark to train nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Tribal officials say the goal is to strengthen healthcare access in rural communities and on tribal lands, where hospitals and clinics continue to face staffing shortages.

Workforce Training Seen as Long-Term Solution

The nursing school would focus on workforce development, helping students train closer to home and remain in the communities that need them most. Leaders say expanding nursing education locally improves retention and reduces dependence on temporary staffing solutions.

While details are still being finalized, Cherokee officials say the partnership could play a critical role in stabilizing rural healthcare systems across eastern Oklahoma.
