Cherokee Nation Takes Ownership of Historic Worcester Cemetery
Transfer Preserves One of the Tribe’s Most Important Sites
The Cherokee Nation has officially taken ownership of the Park Hill Mission/Worcester Cemetery, one of the tribe’s most historically significant locations. The transfer occurred through a formal agreement between the Historical Society and the Cherokee Nation.
The cemetery is known as the burial place of several influential Cherokee figures and leaders from the 19th century.
Chief Hoskin Calls It a Meaningful Moment
Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said signing the documents to assume ownership was one of the most meaningful actions of his time in office.
Hoskin stated:
“This document… this means a great deal to the Cherokee people.”
The Nation says the transfer ensures long-term preservation and stewardship of the site, which holds deep cultural and historical importance.
Restoration and Preservation Plans
The Cherokee Nation plans to maintain and protect the cemetery, which has long been a symbol of the tribe’s resilience, heritage, and spiritual identity.
The cemetery will remain accessible to the public.
