Calumet earthquakes recorded by USGS over seven days
The Calumet earthquakes continue to draw attention after the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed 53 earthquakes have struck the same general area about five miles east-northeast of Calumet in the past week.
Most of the quakes have been small and difficult for residents to feel, but seismic activity has remained steady and closely clustered. Officials say monitoring continues as the pattern develops.
Strongest Calumet earthquakes measured this week
The largest of the recent Calumet earthquakes registered at magnitude 3.6 on Sunday, followed by two separate 3.1 magnitude tremors and a 2.6 aftershock just hours later, according to USGS earthquake monitoring data.
While these magnitudes are considered minor on a global scale, they can still be noticeable to people living nearby and may raise concern when multiple events happen in a short time frame.
What increased Oklahoma seismic activity can mean
Oklahoma has experienced periodic increases in earthquake activity over the past decade, prompting ongoing tracking by state and federal agencies including the U.S. Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Geological Survey.
Experts say clusters like the recent Calumet earthquakes are typically monitored for patterns, frequency, and magnitude trends to determine whether activity is stabilizing or escalating.
