WEBBERS FALLS, Okla. — The small town of Webbers Falls has appointed Austin Alden as its new police chief following the unexpected resignation of former Chief Mike James. The announcement comes during a period of financial strain that has left the department with only one officer — Alden himself.
Sudden Leadership Change
Former Chief Mike James resigned abruptly last week without public explanation. The resignation left town officials scrambling to fill the leadership void in the Webbers Falls Police Department, which has been dealing with severe budget shortfalls.
Just two weeks ago, the town laid off both of its remaining officers due to lack of funds. That decision left the community without active local patrols, relying instead on nearby agencies for support.
Alden’s Immediate Priorities
Chief Alden, who now serves as the only officer in Webbers Falls, says his first focus will be addressing the budget issues that have crippled the department.
“My top priority is to stabilize the budget so we can rebuild our police force,” Alden said. “Right now, public safety is our main concern, and we’re going to make sure the people of Webbers Falls are protected.”
County Support on Standby
The Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office has offered assistance with calls when needed, ensuring there is no gap in emergency response. Sheriff’s deputies have already been covering certain incidents while Alden works on plans to restore staffing.
Town officials are also considering possible grant opportunities and community fundraising efforts to supplement the police budget.
A Community on Alert
Residents have expressed concern over having just one officer to cover the entire town, but Alden says he remains committed to being visible and accessible.
“We might be small, but we’re strong,” he said. “I’m here to serve, and I will make sure our town stays safe no matter the circumstances.”
