Bo Gritz Vietnam War veteran and Rambo inspiration dies at 87

Bo Gritz, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran and former U.S. Army Green Beret often cited as inspiration for the John Rambo character, has died at the age of 87.

James Gordon “Bo” Gritz passed away February 27, 2026, at his home in Sandy Valley, Nevada, following a battle with cancer.

Bo Gritz Vietnam War veteran from Enid earned numerous decorations

Born in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1939, Bo Gritz served in the U.S. Army Special Forces from 1957 until 1979.

During his military career, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and became one of the most decorated soldiers of the Vietnam War.

Military service records and historical archives are maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Bo Gritz linked to inspiration for John Rambo character

Gritz long maintained that his combat operations and military career helped inspire the John Rambo character featured in the 1982 film “First Blood.”

The film introduced the iconic action hero portrayed by actor Sylvester Stallone and became a major cultural touchstone tied to the legacy of the Vietnam War.

Film history and production details are documented by the American Film Institute.

Controversial missions and political involvement

After leaving the military, Bo Gritz became known for leading private missions into Southeast Asia during the 1980s searching for American POW/MIA soldiers he believed were still being held captive.

His activities were controversial because the missions were not sanctioned by the U.S. government.

Gritz later entered politics, running for President of the United States in 1992 as the nominee of the Populist Party, and he was involved in mediating the Ruby Ridge standoff the same year.
