Fake Calls Target Ardmore Utility Customers

Ardmore residents are being targeted by a new phone scam. Callers are posing as city officials and demanding immediate payment for water bills.

City leaders say the scam is dangerous because it preys on fear of service shutoffs. The callers are pressuring residents to pay quickly by phone — a tactic commonly used by scam operations.

City: “We Never Take Payment Over the Phone”

Ardmore officials issued a clear warning: the city will never ask for water bill payments by phone. Customers who receive such a call are urged to hang up immediately and contact the city at 580-226-2100 to verify their account status.

Residents who may have given out payment information are encouraged to notify their bank and the police. Authorities are also asking victims to share the scam number so they can pursue an investigation.

Protecting Yourself Against Scams

Scams of this type are not new to Oklahoma. In the past year, several cities reported similar schemes involving utility bills, Social Security benefits, or fake IRS collections. Officials say the best defense is awareness and verification.
