Anadarko Public Schools Reviewing Junior High Football Team Incident

The Anadarko Public Schools administration says it is completing its investigation into a social media video involving members of the junior high football team after footage appeared to show students placing another student into a trash can during a practice break.

Superintendent Danny Pittman said administrators have now reviewed all available video footage and determined students were not adequately supervised when the incident occurred. School officials say disciplinary action will be taken while also acknowledging the district's responsibility to provide proper supervision. Because the incident involves minors, News 9 and other media outlets have chosen not to publish the video.

Anadarko Public Schools Completes Internal Review

Pittman said the district has finished reviewing available video evidence and has interviewed the students involved.

"Our students were not adequately supervised during the water break when this incident occurred," Pittman said in an updated statement.

He acknowledged that several students engaged in inappropriate behavior but emphasized that school staff also bear responsibility for failing to provide the supervision expected during athletic activities.

The district's statement, published by News 9, says administrators are completing conversations with students and will issue appropriate consequences and corrective actions for those involved.

Pittman added that the behavior shown in the video does not reflect the expectations the district has for its students, coaches, staff or community.

District Says Accountability Includes Adults

While disciplinary action will be taken involving students, Pittman said the investigation also examined adult supervision during the incident.

He said the district's goal extends beyond identifying student misconduct and includes correcting the failures that allowed the situation to occur.

"What happened that day does not accurately reflect the standards we have for our students, our coaches and staff, our school or our community," Pittman said.

District leaders say they are implementing corrective measures intended to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.

Information about district policies and student conduct is available through Anadarko Public Schools.

School Focuses On Student Safety Moving Forward

The investigation began after a video circulated on social media appearing to show several students carrying another student outside the school before placing the student into a trash can.

School officials say the video generated understandable concern among parents and community members.

Pittman said the district remains committed to protecting student safety while ensuring disciplinary decisions are made only after a complete review of the facts.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education encourages school districts to maintain safe learning environments while following established disciplinary procedures involving students.

Anadarko Public Schools says its focus now is on accountability, improved supervision and ensuring students learn from the incident as the school year continues.
