ACCESS Oklahoma Turnpike Project Moves Forward Near Norman
An ACCESS Oklahoma turnpike project near Norman is moving forward despite ongoing public opposition, after the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority approved an $18 million construction contract to build a new bridge tied to the controversial expansion plan.
OTA officials say the bridge contract is part of the broader ACCESS Oklahoma turnpike expansion, which aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term transportation capacity across central Oklahoma. Critics of the project argue the expansion threatens landowners, increases toll burdens, and permanently alters rural and suburban areas near Norman.
Why the ACCESS Oklahoma turnpike project is advancing
OTA spokesperson Darian Butler told commissioners the bridge construction is necessary to support future turnpike connections planned under ACCESS Oklahoma. Butler emphasized that the authority is moving ahead with infrastructure commitments already approved in earlier phases of the expansion.
The ACCESS Oklahoma plan includes multiple new toll roads, extensions, and interchange upgrades across the metro. While legal challenges and organized opposition continue, OTA officials say the authority is legally obligated to proceed with approved contracts unless courts intervene.
Public opposition remains strong
Opponents of the ACCESS Oklahoma turnpike project have criticized the lack of alternative routes, potential impacts on property values, and long-term toll costs. Community groups near Norman have repeatedly asked lawmakers and transportation officials to pause or reconsider the expansion.
OTA leaders maintain the projects are needed to accommodate population growth and freight traffic in the region.
