A joint city-county jail Is Being Planned

Lawton’s city manager and a Comanche County Commissioner are in the early stages of creating a joint city-county jail. The Southwest Ledger reports the city jail is operated by the Lawton Police Department while the Comanche County Detention Center is managed by a County Facilities Authority comprised of the three county commissioners. The facility has a state authorized capacity of 283 inmates but has exceeded that number continuously since 2006. One of the big issues is the multiple inmate deaths in the past few years.
