Waurika Boil Water Advisory Issued After Extreme Cold Impacts System

A Waurika boil water advisory is now in effect as city officials warn that extreme cold weather and low water tower levels may have compromised the town’s public water system.

The Waurika Public Works Authority says prolonged freezing temperatures led many residents to drip faucets to prevent pipe damage. Combined with declining water levels in the system’s storage tower, officials say the conditions created a risk for contamination.

Waurika boil water advisory affects public water customers

Residents who receive water from the city’s public works authority are advised to bring all water to a full, rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing dishes.

Public works officials say the advisory is precautionary but necessary until water pressure stabilizes and required testing confirms the system is safe.

Cold weather strains rural water infrastructure

According to the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, extended cold snaps can stress aging rural water systems by increasing line breaks and pressure fluctuations, both of which raise contamination risks.

Officials urge residents to stay updated through city announcements as crews monitor the system and complete required testing.
