Volunteers Needed For Oklahoma River Clean Sweep After July 4 Celebrations
Thousands of people are expected to gather along the Oklahoma River for Independence Day festivities, and city leaders are asking residents to help clean up once the celebrations are over. The Oklahoma River Clean Sweep returns Saturday, July 5, giving volunteers the opportunity to remove litter before it washes into local waterways.
The event is hosted by Oklahoma City's Waterway Clean Sweep Program in partnership with OKC Parks and is open to individuals, families, businesses, and community groups.
Organizers say even a few hours of volunteer work can make a significant difference in protecting the Oklahoma River and improving local parks.
Oklahoma River Clean Sweep Scheduled For July 5
The Oklahoma River Clean Sweep will take place from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, July 5, immediately following the Fourth of July holiday.
Volunteers can choose to participate at one of two cleanup locations:
Wiley Post Park Pavilion – 2021 S. Robinson Ave.
Wheeler Park – 1120 S. Western Ave.
Participants will receive a mandatory safety briefing before beginning work. The City will provide gloves, safety vests, trash bags, litter grabbers, and other cleanup supplies while quantities last.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, and community service verification letters will be available upon request.
Residents can register online through the Oklahoma City Waterway Clean Sweep Program.
City Hopes To Keep Trash Out Of Oklahoma Waterways
City officials say the annual cleanup is especially important after large holiday crowds gather along the river.
Environmental Protection Superintendent Derek Johnson said thousands of visitors enjoy the Oklahoma River during Independence Day celebrations, but trash left behind often ends up blowing into the water if it is not collected quickly.
Removing litter shortly after the holiday helps protect wildlife, improve water quality, and keep parks clean for future visitors.
Beyond the July 5 event, the Waterway Clean Sweep Program offers volunteer opportunities throughout the year, allowing individuals, civic organizations, schools, churches, and businesses to organize additional cleanup projects across Oklahoma City.
Program information, volunteer requirements, and cleanup guidelines are available through the City of Oklahoma City Storm Water Quality Program.
Individuals, Families And Groups Encouraged To Volunteer
Volunteers are needed of all ages, whether participating individually or with a larger group.
City staff will assign cleanup areas based on group size and location preferences while providing onsite supervision and safety training throughout the event.
Organizers note that volunteers may participate as often as they like during future cleanup events, helping reduce pollution and improve the health of Oklahoma City's waterways year-round.
Anyone interested in joining the Oklahoma River Clean Sweep or scheduling a future community cleanup can register online or contact the City for additional information and volunteer opportunities.
Residents can also learn more about Oklahoma City's parks and environmental programs through OKC Parks.
The Oklahoma River Clean Sweep offers residents a simple way to give back to their community while helping preserve one of Oklahoma City's most popular recreational destinations after one of its busiest weekends of the year.
