Volunteers Sought for Oklahoma City River Cleanup

Oklahoma City is calling on volunteers to help remove trash from local waterways during an upcoming river cleanup event on January 10. The effort is part of the city’s Waterway Clean Sweep program, which focuses on reducing pollution and protecting local water resources.

Why This Cleanup Is Different

City officials say recent work to lower the river basin will allow volunteers to access areas that are usually underwater, creating a rare opportunity for a deeper cleanup. Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., collecting debris and waste that can negatively impact water quality and wildlife.

Impact of Volunteer Efforts

Last year alone, Waterway Clean Sweep volunteers removed more than 11,000 pounds of trash from Oklahoma City waterways. City leaders say those efforts help prevent storm-drain blockages, reduce flooding risks, and keep trash from reaching downstream lakes and rivers.

Organizers encourage residents, families, and civic groups to participate.
