U.S. strikes on Iran could escalate, impact Oklahoma military operations

Retired war correspondent and former Pentagon correspondent Mike Boettcher says the latest U.S. strikes on Iran were likely the activation of long-standing Pentagon war plans and warned the situation could escalate into a broader Middle East conflict, with possible ripple effects reaching Oklahoma.

Boettcher spoke with News 9 by phone Tuesday morning after President Donald Trump suggested it may be time for regime change in Iran following coordinated U.S. and Israeli military action.

Pentagon war plans likely activated in U.S. strikes on Iran

Boettcher said the speed of the U.S. strikes on Iran suggests detailed military planning was already in place.

“The military, the Pentagon specifically, has plans for things like this, for everything,” Boettcher said. “Those plans are up on a shelf. And when the circumstances happen like they have now, they pull those plans off, revise them a bit, and they move and take action.”

He said the rapid execution indicates existing U.S. military operational plans were modified and deployed quickly.

Information on defense operations and strategy is available through the U.S. Department of Defense.

Iran response raises risk of broader regional war

Boettcher warned the fallout from the U.S. strikes on Iran could last days or longer.

“I think days at the very least,” he said, describing what he believes could become an expanded regional war in the Middle East.

He said Iran has reportedly targeted U.S. military bases in Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, while also striking Israel and Saudi Arabia. U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed casualty figures.

“This has the chance to explode into a larger regional war,” Boettcher said.

Updates on international developments are published by the U.S. Department of State.

Tinker Air Force Base could play a role

Boettcher said the escalating Iran conflict could have implications for Oklahoma national security, specifically referencing Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City.

“Our Tinker Air Force Base here in Oklahoma City has units that would be integral for this sort of attack to occur,” Boettcher said. “My assumption, and only my assumption, is those units are involved in this.”

There has been no official confirmation of Tinker’s involvement in the U.S. strikes on Iran.

Boettcher also raised concerns about potential retaliatory terrorism, noting Iran does not have missiles capable of reaching the United States but has established global networks over decades.

Federal officials have not announced any specific threats to Oklahoma or other U.S. locations.

Background on Tinker Air Force Base operations is available through the U.S. Air Force.

This is a developing story.
