Two Injured After Juveniles Breach Restricted Area at COJC
Incident Sends Guard and Resident for Medical Treatment
Tecumseh Police confirm an employee and a resident at the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) were injured Monday night after four juveniles gained access to areas outside their assigned housing unit. Police say the youth took keys, opened multiple pod doors, and during the incident, a guard and another resident received stab wounds.
No Escape Attempted; All Youth Accounted For
Officers say no juveniles made it outside the secure perimeter. Staff regained control of the pods and called law enforcement. Both injured individuals were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Facility Has Long History and Ongoing Staffing Challenges
COJC, located in Tecumseh, is Oklahoma’s primary long-term secure treatment facility operated by the Office of Juvenile Affairs. It houses up to 144 youth and has faced staffing shortages and safety concerns in recent years, according to prior agency reports. Authorities have not yet released information on what led to the altercation.
Investigation Underway
The Office of Juvenile Affairs and Tecumseh Police continue to investigate how the juveniles accessed the keys and whether policy or security procedures were violated.
