Tinker Air Force Base Expansion Begins On New Bomber Campus

The Tinker Air Force Base expansion has officially begun with the groundbreaking of a massive new bomber campus that will strengthen America's long-range bomber fleet while creating hundreds of new aerospace jobs in Oklahoma.

The expansion marks the start of a multi-phase development project that will transform 78 additional acres adjacent to the existing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul Technology Center (MROTC) into a state-of-the-art maintenance complex supporting the B-52 Stratofortress and the nation's next-generation B-21 Raider stealth bomber. Base officials say the project represents one of the largest military infrastructure investments at Tinker Air Force Base in decades.

Tinker Air Force Base Expansion Launches New Bomber Campus

The Tinker Air Force Base expansion begins with construction of a $127 million Bomber Agile Common Hangar, a facility designed to perform depot-level maintenance on multiple bomber aircraft simultaneously.

The hangar will stretch approximately the length of two football fields and feature four oversized aircraft doors capable of accommodating large military bombers. The project is part of a larger bomber campus being developed on property purchased by the U.S. Air Force along Douglas Boulevard.

The Air Force acquired 131 acres for the project. The existing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul Technology Center occupies 53 acres, while the remaining 78 acres will become the new bomber maintenance campus.

Information released by the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex at Tinker Air Force Base outlines the facility's mission of supporting long-term aircraft sustainment and modernization for the Air Force's strategic bomber fleet.

Construction on the initial hangar is expected to continue through 2030.

New Campus Will Support America's Bomber Fleet

The new bomber campus has been designed to support multiple aircraft platforms while expanding Tinker's role in national defense.

In addition to handling commercial engine replacement work for the B-52 Stratofortress, the campus is being developed as the Air Force's sole depot maintenance facility for the B-21 Raider, the nation's newest stealth bomber.

Future phases of the project include runway improvements, a new taxiway crossing, five additional maintenance hangars and expanded aircraft support facilities over the next decade.

The U.S. Air Force B-21 Raider Program identifies the aircraft as the backbone of America's future long-range strike capability, making Tinker's maintenance mission a critical component of national defense.

Infrastructure improvements are also underway around the installation, including utility relocation, expanded security entry points, roadway improvements and upgraded electrical service needed to support the growing maintenance complex.

Expansion Expected To Create More Than 1,000 Jobs

Beyond its military significance, the Tinker Air Force Base expansion is expected to provide a major economic boost for central Oklahoma.

Project leaders estimate the bomber campus will create more than 1,000 high-quality aerospace jobs over the next two decades while generating additional demand for contractors, suppliers and supporting industries throughout the region.

Traffic improvements are already underway around the installation as crews prepare for increased activity. Current construction includes roadway work near SE 29th Street, expanded access improvements near Hruskocy Gate, and future transportation upgrades that will support the growing campus.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) has also completed improvements near Interstate 40 and continues coordinating roadway projects designed to improve traffic flow around Tinker Air Force Base as construction progresses.

Once complete, the expanded bomber campus will reinforce Oklahoma's position as one of the nation's premier military aviation and aerospace maintenance centers while supporting the Air Force's next generation of strategic aircraft for decades to come.
