Under the agreement, the Oklahoma City Thunder receive three future second-round draft picks, including a 2027 selection via the Chicago Bulls, along with second-round picks in 2031 and 2032.

Atlanta also receives guard Ryan Nembhard from Dallas as part of the transaction.

Dort leaves Oklahoma City after developing into one of the NBA's premier perimeter defenders. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019, he became a cornerstone of the Thunder's defense and earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors during his career in Oklahoma City.

Financial Flexibility Was A Major Factor

While Dort became a fan favorite for his relentless defense and physical style of play, the trade also provides important financial benefits for Oklahoma City.

Thunder General Manager Sam Presti has emphasized maintaining roster flexibility while navigating the NBA's increasingly restrictive salary cap rules.

By moving Dort's salary, along with previous offseason trades involving Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, Oklahoma City reportedly avoids approximately $224 million in future payroll and luxury tax penalties.

The Thunder also exercised Dort's $17.7 million contract option before completing the trade, creating a $17 million trade exception while keeping the franchise below the NBA's second luxury tax apron.

Thunder Look Ahead To Defending Their Title

The departure of Dort leaves a significant void on the defensive end of the floor.

Much of his playing time is expected to shift to Cason Wallace, who has already established himself as one of the league's promising young perimeter defenders, while rookie Otega Oweh could also see an expanded opportunity.
