Teacher background check bill advances in Oklahoma Senate
A proposal aimed at strengthening teacher background checks in Oklahoma is moving forward at the State Capitol.
The Oklahoma Senate Education Committee voted to advance legislation authored by Senator Michael Bergstrom that expands a 2025 law dealing with how school districts share information when teachers change jobs.
Teacher background checks in Oklahoma expanded under proposal
The bill would strengthen teacher background checks in Oklahoma by expanding requirements for school districts to disclose information about teachers during the hiring process.
Current law requires a district to provide a letter confirming whether a teacher left in “good standing.”
Under the proposal, districts would also be required to disclose whether a teacher was under an ongoing investigation at the time they left employment.
Legislative updates and bill language are available through the Oklahoma State Senate.
Bill targets gaps in teacher hiring process
Supporters say the measure closes gaps in teacher background checks in Oklahoma by ensuring that potential disciplinary concerns are shared between districts even if an investigation has not been completed.
Sen. Bergstrom described the legislation as a “work in progress” during the committee hearing.
Measure moves forward with possible revisions
During the hearing, Senate Education Committee Chair Adam Pugh suggested the bill move forward while allowing time for additional revisions.
Committee members agreed to advance the measure with the understanding that it may be tweaked and refined before reaching the full Senate floor.
